There are still a lot of questions and those will likely never really be answered. What we know is that Brian was in a severe car accident on Monday evening (January 6th). He was a pedestrian who was hit by a car. The other car stayed at the scene and did everything they could to avoid Brian, but it was just one of those very unfortunate accidents. The accident information is, of course, the least of our concerns.
So to the important stuff. He is currently still in the ICU in a coma, which if I understand correctly is both a spontaneous coma as well as medically induced. He was diagnosed with Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) which means he has damage to his neurons. This is a tough diagnosis since there isn't a lot in terms of treatment. It will be a lot of rehab and recovery. He also has a broken humorous that will need surgery. He will also need surgery to change his ventilator to one through his trachea instead of one down his throat. He also will need a surgery to move his feeding tube to be in his stomach (also instead of down his throat). These are all to make him more comfortable and help with weening him off the sedation. These surgeries are hopefully going to be early next week which is fantastic! Other than the arm, the other surgeries will provide him more comfort.
We still do not know the severity of his injury. I did just meet with the neuro team. What they said was kind of a mixed bag. He does have the DAI but they also know he also has brain damage due to the time that they were performing CPR. The neurosurgeon said from the MRI his DAI does not look too bad, but there isn't a way to know about the extent of the brain damage since that can't be seen on any imaging. That will really only be evident after he wakes up. The neurologist said their kind of "magic number" is 14 days for him to wake up. We just have to hope that his brain damage isn't too severe. He did also say that Brian is making spontaneous and purposeful movements that indicate he does have some good brain function and these are not just reflexes. It is showing he is (at least to some extent) aware of his surroundings.
We have a long road that will likely be several months to years. It will all depend on Brain and how he heals. I know he can be a stubborn little shit, so let's hope he changes that at least for his healing!
