Brian's Brain Healing Journey

I figured this might be a little bit easier than sending the updates to everyone. Brian was in a severe car accident on Monday January 6th. This will be a place for me (Nicole, his wife) to share updates on his condition and how his healing is going. We have a long road ahead of us. I have posted the history up to this point already and I have also created the Guest Book and Memories Page so please share stories about Brian (or all of us as a family). I will really look forward to reading them and hopefully that will help him in the recovery process too. He really is a special guy and has clearly impacted so many lives by just the outpouring of love and support that we have seen. It has been truly so wonderful to witness and we are all so incredibly lucky. As we know, it will be a long road, but I know we will pull through this and we will have so much support throughout the whole ordeal. We really really love all of you! 🤍

Accident and Medical Information

There are still a lot of questions and those will likely never really be answered. What we know is that Brian was in a severe car accident on Monday evening (January 6th). He was a pedestrian who was hit by a car. The other car stayed at the scene and did everything they could to avoid Brian, but it was just one of those very unfortunate accidents. The accident information is, of course, the least of our concerns. So to the important stuff. He is currently still in the ICU in a coma, which if I understand correctly is both a spontaneous coma as well as medically induced. He was diagnosed with Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) which means he has damage to his neurons. This is a tough diagnosis since there isn't a lot in terms of treatment. It will be a lot of rehab and recovery. He also has a broken humorous that will need surgery. He will also need surgery to change his ventilator to one through his trachea instead of one down his throat. He also will need a surgery to move his feeding ...

The Final Update

Today is the 1 year anniversary of Brian's accident. I had been thinking for a while now that I wanted today to be my last update. We haven't had a lot of exciting developments lately and it seemed fitting to end the updates on the anniversary of Brian's accident. It's hard to put into words what today felt like and what today meant for us. Thinking back on this year is traumatic and also inspiring. The countless hours spent in the hospital on one side but then the friends we made while at the hospital on the other side. Days spent wondering what life would look like after Brian came out of his coma and was out of the hospitals and seeing how far Brian has recovered in only a year. I can vividly remember one of the members of the trauma team saying they don't mark recovery from an injury like Brian's until a year and I thought that seemed so far away and here we are and his recovery far exceeds my expectation based on how he was at that time.
