Wednesday 22Jan Update!

Today was such an amazing and wonderful day!

Today was the most awake and aware I have seen him since he arrived at the hospital. When I got to the hospital this morning Brian had his eye open (that left eye is still sluggish). He was looking around at the room and was also looking and focusing on me. He continued to have his eyes open for over an hour. A friend of Brian's and my sister in law were there this morning during this time too and he distinctly looked at each of us and seemed very aware that there were three of us in the room. He also made a couple faces at us while he was awake. He was able to follow us around with his eyes and also was moving his head around to try and look at who was talking. We did see his left eye open a little bit a few times. 

He spent a lot of the morning awake and then seemed to get tired later on during the afternoon. He was breathing with the trach collar again this morning and his respiratory team mentioned their plan for the day was to let Brian spend the day on the collar and then switch him to the vent during the night so he could rest. 

One last thing Brian needs to work on is his digestion. He has an ileus which is a condition where his digestion just isn't totally working correctly (he's got so much going on, this isn't surprising). This isn't something (that for now anyway) that will need to be treated with surgery. It is something that just needs to fix itself. He needs to "cure" his ileus first before getting moved to the LTAC in order to avoid getting brought back to the hospital. Today they have Brian working on his goal feed rate and making sure he can tolerate it. As long as that continues to improve, he should be able to move to the LTAC. I am working on coordinating while we're at the hospital.
