Another good day for Brian! As repetitive as that is, I'll never get tired of saying that one.
When I got to the hospital this morning, Brian was already in the chair and PT was there working with him. He was pretty sleepy, but she was able to do some stretching for him. She mentioned his shoulders are pretty tight, so I'm going to do restart the range of motion stretched with him a few times a day just to try and get those loosened up again. He tends to do a great job moving around all his joints except his shoulders. So that is something easy I can help do while I'm at the hospital.
This afternoon when they put Brian in the chair, I got a lesson from respiratory in tracheostomy care which was so awesome! I know I won't be really doing any of that now or probably even at the LTAC, but just knowing how to care for it was really cool. I need to improve my ability to insert the inner cannula because I struggled with that today. I made Brian cough a lot and then I felt really bad. Speech therapy yesterday also mentioned that if I am comfortable with it, I can put on his speaking valve when he is up in the chair for up to an hour. So I did that today after respiratory showed me the trach care. Today was a day for him just to have on the speaking valve, he was not interested in speaking today. But even just having it on is a win. 😊
An exciting development today, one of the times Brian was sitting in the chair today he decided to play catch with me. He threw one of his stress balls on the ground so I asked if he wanted to play catch and he nodded. We threw the ball back and forth a few times before he got bored and moved on to something else. But that was really really cool to see. He was definitely able to throw it to me and catch when I threw it back (as long as I had a good throw). It's pretty amazing to see his hand-eye coordination is still definitely there.
