Happy Monday!
Brian had a great day today. He started off the day with some ADLs with an occupational therapist. As a reminder, that is just assistance while getting ready for the day. Then his first class today was with speech. After speech he had a session with another OT that is more of a game/fun session. He spent this one working on the lego set he started last week. Following that he had some time with his doctor again to make sure everything is going well and answer any questions we may have had. We mentioned to him we want to work towards Brian getting an off campus pass with driving so he can go to some of Lincoln's lacrosse games. They are going to add that to Brian's goals and give us some definitive steps Brian needs to take to get that!
Then he had PT today. I have mentioned this around the hospital and I can't remember if I have on here too, but PT is his favorite class since he gets to get up and walk around. He did some more challenging walking today with the treadmill. I took a few videos that Brian gave me permission to share here to really show his amazing improvement since getting to Craig (I added them to the end of this post). His balance is drastically improved and he is walking so much more steady.
In the afternoon Brian had OT. She worked with Brian on his shoulder mobility and did some work with his scar to help loosen up the scar tissue. She did some work with shoulder stretches that the manual therapist wants him to do three times a week. She gave Brian some homework to do them on his own too since she is going to do them only once a week. She also had time build some circuits. This is great for his finger dexterity as well as reading and following directions. It was similar to legos which Craig really loves since it requires so much brain work.
Right after OT Brian had another speech session with the assistive technology. She helps him work with his iPad. The iPad is a tool that we can use to try and help understand Brian a little better when he is trying to speak with us but the words aren't coming out right. One difficulty though is knowing where the potential word he is saying is. This is something we as caregivers and staff need to know, but also he needs to know so he can find it and help us when we can't understand him. He is pretty good with the needs section now and she helped in some of the other sections of the app.
One other exciting update is Brian moved to a share today. So that means that he did not have a tech assigned to just him today. This was a bit of a trial to see how he would do with this and they were short staffed with techs so it was an almost necessary trial run. He did really great when I was there, but I am a bit nervous for how he did after I had to leave for the day. I did not get a phone call so that gives me confidence that is wasn't too bad. I will learn more tomorrow when I get there, but hopefully it went really well and we can continue to move towards less restrictions for him.
Hair cut looks great! I love seeing the determined look in his eyes on the second video!
