Today ended up being a great day! Brian had a bit of a rough start to the day because he was sad and apathetic. He ended up sleeping through and refusing to go to speech therapy this morning which is obviously not great. When I got there, I helped convince him to get up and out of bed to participate in the rest of the day.
Today he had a very busy day even with skipping speech. He started today with some balance work with PT. He used a harness on a track to practice kicking while walking and more dribbling while walking. The kicking was especially tricky since it requires a lot more balance since he has to stand on one foot. After PT Brian had OT and today they baked cookies! The best part is that we got to eat them after he was done baking them. 😋
After lunch Brian had manual therapy, which is kind of just a specialized PT who uses specialized techniques. He saw her last week and she helped with some needling and stretching of Brian's shoulders. If you remember, his shoulders were at like a 11/10 pain wise for several days. She previously did some stretches and needling in order to help lower that pain down. And a combination of that and other work from his normal PT and OT helped to bring that down to a 2 this week which is obviously a massive improvement! She repeated a lot of the same techniques today and also wanted to look at his neck to make sure he wasn't also having any pain stemming from his neck rather than just his shoulders, chest, and back. His neck did not seem to have any pain so that is one less area for her to have to focus on.
Brian also had a visit from his psychologist in order to make sure his emotions are doing okay. Since he didn't want to get out of bed this morning, she wanted to make sure that we can work to prevent that from happening again. She was already scheduled to see him today as part of her routine care. She suggested increasing a medication Brian is on to a slightly higher dose to see if that helps to improve his overall mood. She also told me about the cognitive work she was able to complete with Brian one of the days last week after I had left for the day. She was very impressed with Brian's cognition level and said that his verbal understanding is excellent. This is really great to hear because she said that often the verbal understanding comes first and then his verbal output should show improvement.
Then to finish out his day today, Brian spent some time in T. Rec. He first played some air hockey but that was a bit tough on his shoulders so they decided to switch to connect 4. We played a giant connect 4 with teams. Brian and the T. Rec. therapist were on a team and his tech and I were on a team. Brian and the therapist beat us (and we definitely tried to win). After connect 4 we played skeech. That was pretty fun and Brian ended up winning that game too!
