Happy Tuesday! Today was so much better than yesterday! 🙌
Today started with Brian doing ADLs to get himself ready for the day! Then his beard was bothering him so he shaved his neck all by himself today! He was very proud to show it off to me when I got to the hospital and rightfully so! Then after this he had manual therapy. She came in and did some stretching and massaging on Brian's left shoulder. In his rotator cuff repair surgery they also did some manual manipulation on his left side to help release his frozen shoulder. I can't remember if I mentioned that before, so I figured I would mention it again. Something that is really important is to keep working the shoulder and stretching it out so it doesn't freeze up again so his manual therapist is helping with that. There are also a few stretches for us to do in our downtime also when we have time.
Then Brian had speech. In the first half of the session she talked about a goals chart that she made together with the behavior team to help Brian better understand how to get out of his lock belt. I don't know if I have mentioned it on this blog before or not, but something that Craig uses to help keep patients safe is a lock belt. This is exactly what it sounds like and is a belt that locks and the staff members all have keys. This just helps the patients stay safe since someone will always be with them when they are unlocked. Brian's next big behavior goal is to lose that lock belt. He is super close, but has had a few moments of unsafe behavior (usually it's just walking around unaccompanied, which he shouldn't be doing quite yet due to his balance). This goal chart will help him always keep his tasks front of mind.
Then after speech (and lunch) he had PT. This was the session we struggled in yesterday so I think everyone was a bit anxious. But Brian did so great today! It really goes to show how hard he is working and how difficult the first session was with it being our first time trying that. We didn't have any issues today while walking and crossing streets and communicating. Brian was funny when we got back to the room we were talking about our walk and he said that it was fine and he isn't worried about that post discharge because we don't ever go on long walks around random communities. Which, he's not wrong. I did tell him though that we may be incorporating activities like this because it is good for his physical therapy and also for his dual tasking. On our walk today we walked past Lincoln St. so we took a picture to show Lincoln tonight. He loves when we drive by Lincoln St/Aves and always says that is my street!
Then Brian ended his day today with OT. In that session they talked about the big outing they have planned for Friday and planned out some activities and strategies for navigating at the outing.
