Today was a great day for us! The day started off today with OT to get himself ready for the day with ADLs. Then he had speech! Brian played a go fish style game in order to practice sentence creation. Immediately following speech, Brian had another speech session with the assistive technology speech. We have transitioned Brian from the Craig loaned iPad to his phone, but the phone is significantly locked down right now. A very common thing that we have been told that happens with patients with brain injury is not thinking through their decisions and then doing things they shouldn't with their phones (for example, spending thousands on Amazon or posting stuff they wouldn't want to normally on social media). But this will end up a significant improvement for Brian since he is comfortable with his phone and can use it the same way as the iPad we were using. Right now he is mainly using his phone to manage his schedule each day.
Then this afternoon Brian had PT. Today she wanted to do testing for Brian again. Today he did 4 different tests with her. He did a test that measures how far he will walk in 6 minutes. He has done that before and he nearly exactly matched the distance today. His therapist said she was happy with that since that shows he is consistent in his gait and walking speed. Then he did a test to test how well Brian can maintain his gait with challenges. He had to do some walking while looking different directions and other obstacles. Then after that he did a test that measured his normal walking speed and his fastest safe walking speed. Then for the final test he did a very difficult test. It was a more extreme balance test. He had to stand legs together, in a straight line, and on one foot. But at the same time he had to have his eyes closed and hands on his hips. He did it first on the normal floor and then again on a foam pad. And he did so well (honestly might have beat me if I would have tried) 😅
That is all he had for today! Kind of a light day, but it was still a packed schedule!
