Wednesday 07May

Another rainy day today!

We started out the day this morning by taking Lincoln to school. Right after school drop off, we made our way down to Craig for Brian's appointments. We saw speech again today and they talked about Brian's main speech related goals and how they are going to work together to accomplish those. Then after that we saw Brian's new psychologist. Her main goal for this appointment was to get to know Brian and also his goals related to psychology. Her role in Brian's recovery is monitoring his mood and mental health as well as his cognitive skills. Her job will be to evaluate Brian and when he is ready to return to those activities that require higher order thought processes and problem solving (such as overall independence, driving, and returning to work). Her approval to return to those tasks are based on a test that Brian is currently not yet ready for. She said with brain injuries as severe as Brian's she doesn't recommend doing those tests until 8-12 months post injury. His aphasia also plays a bit of a role in that testing, which we had spoken to his inpatient psychologist about that previously because she said she doesn't want him marked down in the cognition when he was just choosing the wrong words.

This was a bit disappointing for Brian because he is antsy to be back to work. I have tried to tell him to try and take advantage of this work hiatus that is literally prescribed by doctors. I think that sounds amazing, to have a doctor tell me I am not allowed to work for a long period of time. Just think of all the reading I would get done. But I also fully understand Brian being bored. He also has his right arm in the sling still until at least the end of May, which significantly limits the activities he can do while at home. Luckily he has plenty of homework from his therapists he needs to work on.
